'74 OMC Stringer - Electric Shift

All of my parts should arrive for the work on it this weekend and I have a couple of questions:

1. When I assemble my new impeller/housing - Do I need to "pre-lube" the impeller with anything to make sure it gets going smoothly on the first run?

2. Anyone know what size nuts hold the pinion gear and the horizontal ball gear on? They are 2 different sizes. I'm pretty sure the pinion is 1" but not sure about the ball gear's nut size... It's larger than 1"

3. What lube do I re-fill the upper unit with? I put Type C in the lower, I know, but do I use the same in the upper?

I saw a post about a guy that has a seized upper 400 unit... Since my gears and bearings are fine, my total cost to rebuild is under $500!!! That is for:

New impeller, impeller housing, impeller shaft, upper unit seal kit, shims, pinion drive shaft. I'm glad all of my gears and bearings are good!!!!

Thanks guys and gal! (There's one gal I know of on here with a stringer, so if there are more, my apologies!)

no lube for impeller, just make sure it has water when ran..i believe ball gear nut is 11/8 or 11/4...as for gear lube, use any good quality gear lube...i'm pretty sure that the whole upper will need to re-shimmed with the replacement pinion shaft....manual calls for special shim tools....not sure if it can be accomplished without them???? good luck

Some Dish Soap on the Impeller will help in the event water does not get to it right away. If you use the Pivot Cap that has a Hose Adaptor on it, plenty of water should reach the impeller before you start it.

Pretty sure the Upper uses the same "C" type OMC lube as the lower.

There are Preload and Rolling Torque procedures that will probably need to be performed.

Special tools are called for in resealing the upper. At least it did for me, so I had someone else do it.

KY jelly makes for a good lube....and if you get "Lucky" you can use it later too!
