Re: speedo

The speedometer is a mechanical gauge. It only has a light. If the other gauge lights work, the bulb in the speedo is burned out or missing. The speedometer has a tube connected on the back that runs to either the pitot on the engine or a separate plastic pitot that sticks into the water at the back of the boat. If the speedo is not working, the tiny hole in the pitot is plugged, the hose is disconnected, or its pinched somewhere. If the hose is off the back of the speedo, your feet would get wet.

Yes -- if you look at the forward side of the pitot you should see a very tiny hole (about the size of sewing needle). This sticks into the water stream and water pressure in the tube compresses air that makes the speedo needle move. If you disconnect the hose at the pitot, you can blow into it to see if the needle moves. Don't use an air compressor directly as you can damage the speedo. Generally crude builds up or gets stuck in the pitot so pressure can't build. Blow backwards throught the pitot to clear it. If it's corroded shut, new universal pitots are just a couple of bucks.
