Long story short, there is water in my oil....is this absolutely a head gasket or cracked block? It is a lot....dipstick is almost twice what it's supposed to be...

Kinda upset because I just bought the boat and I'm pretty sure we blew it up on the test ride.....I thought it was a fuel problem like bad gas....

Any help would be much appreciated.....

I guess this would be helpful, 4.3 OMC...

Thanks

Sorry, didn't mean to ask a moronic question....guess I'm reaching ...just wondering if there is any other way water can get into the oil? Thought I read somewhere it was possible....

You may want to check the intake manifold. Sometimes the gasket will weep, allowing water to seep through the lifter valley and into the pan. I would suspect a head gasket, though. Have you done a compression / leak down test?

Re: Need Help Diagnosing

Thanks for your reply! I just found out this evening so I haven't done any tests yet....but a friend of mine said it may be the exhaust manifold...did a little research and it seems they can crack and dump water in the engine....

If that is the case, I just have to find out WHERE to find one....anyone have any sources? Apparently they were discontinued....is the kit the only option?

Thanks

It's Alittle Early to be Hunting Parts,........ Ya Don't know where you're goin'........

With the little you've said,+ the total Lack of Looking..........

My 1st WAGuess is the Block is Cracked from a Bad Winterization...................

If it's geting Water in the Oil when it's Running,........ It's the Block or Heads are Cracked......

Manifolds will only drop their Water when Sitting,+ Usually you'll find it In the cylinders, then the Oil.....

Hopefully you drained it quick and not letting it set.
That much oil sounds like a cracked block. Better listen to Bondo and Don.
Block pressure test,leakdown test ect...
The manifold kit is available,ebasicpower.com Not cheap though!

Thanks....what is the best way to do a pressure test on this engine?

Re: Need Help Diagnosing

Concerning the cracked manifolds, one thing I did while running it on the muffs was inadvertantly left the water on for hours after i ran it.....if I did have a cracked exhaust manifold, wouldn't this allow a lot of water to go in while it wasn't running? The manifolds are really rusty on the outside, it wouldn't surprise me at all of they have some cracks inside....

I'm getting ready to do the pressure tests...weather bad today....so i block off the coolant hoses? Where exactly? Where do you apply the compressed air?

Thanks,
John

Re: Need Help Diagnosing

My experience has always been that muffs won't get the water past the impeller, so I doubt that leaving the water running on the muffs put water into the engine.

For the pressure test, I'm not sure with OMC, but the basic theory is that you block of whatever hose or hoses go to the manifold, then pull the water intake hose that comes in from the outdrive and pressurize it there.

Good luck.

Re: Need Help Diagnosing

A small update.....

Removed all the plugs to check for water and spray a dab of Deep Creep in them...CYL #1 had some water in it, the rest none that I could tell....

I know I still need to investigate further, and I plan to, but does this give anymore clues or rule anything out?

Thanks a lot,
John
