I am looking at a 115 hp outboard model number 115ESL75 serial number 04822367 It seems to have good compression though I have not verified the numbers, but reportedly does not have any spark. All four coils have cracks and will need to be replaced and the engine has at least the normal amount of dings for this model. It will need at least an impeller if not the total water pump kit and possibly a power pack. The tilt and trim has been removed, but it reportedly now fixed and included. It will definately need carb kits.

I am trying to get a list together of what will likely be needed to get the motor running so I will know how much to offer for the engine. If anyone can give me any insight as to what parts I will need I would greatly appreciate it.

Also if there is anything about this engine that I should know or any reason I would want to avoid it please let me know. Thanks Carl

they were good dependable engine, basic design still use. price the power pack some are quite pricey. do a compression check. if it hasn't been run in a while you mainly want equal numbers across the board, preferable above 100. here's some electrical testing for the future. 6 pages http://www.boatpartstore.com/page30.asp you can look up the engine diagrams and parts list here http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Literature/ and get prices by clicking johnson parts at the top of this page, or go to ishopmarine.com. this will give you an idea of the cost of parts. remember shipping. you can also find some parts on ebay.

Depending on your needs, the 1973-1977 115HP were and are good engines. The lower units and Power Tilt and Trim units however, are not compatible with any other years.

Many motors in this series were sold without the tilt/trim. The units are hard to find in good condition and parts are overly expensive when located.

I have and use several motors from this series. For my money, you would be way ahead to get one from the 1980s with a Tilt and Trim. In good working condition with the control and harness, the motor is not worth $500.

I don't have it in me to advise buying a 32 year motor to anyone, unless they collect them.Seems you want to buy it and use it .Price a timer base first,as that is probably the problem.See if you can fnd one available. My guess is about $250.00.

I would at least buy a motor that runs, not having problems.

Thanks to all, I appreciate the advise. The timer base would put it out of the reasonable range for sure. I am sure that I could have picked it up for no more than $200, but it sounds like it might not be a bargain if it was free. Thanks again

hi i would like to know if you are not going to buy outboard can you give me phone no where to buy we repair these older outboards and they run very fast and are great outboards. but if you are going to buy if you are not getting any spark you got a bad trigger. the trigger has 2 sensors to repair you must remove flywheel. when flywheel is removed you will see the stator remove it and below the stator is the trigger you will see the 2 sensors on it they are about the size of a postage stamp. boat shops can not get these parts anymore because they are to old so look on ebay. i see lots of triggers on ebay that are used but they work great if you do not see one like the one on your outboard look for one that has the same sensors they can be changed with yours because they are all the same from 100hp to 135hp they just bolt on easy fix if you just need to replace water pump about $18.00 and you can get a good trigger on ebay for about $30. you are getting good deal . for the price you are getting outboard i would look into parts before you say no why pay $2000.00 for newer if this on will do the same for less hope this will help good luck

Re: 1975 115hp Johnson Outboard

The post is 2 years old, but I did but the motor for $50.00 and currently have about $300.00 or a little more in it. It was running good up until the last few times and hopefully it is fixed again. I basically had to clean the carbs with kits, get new coils and a new power pack to get it running. I ended up getting a new tilt and trim motor, but do not currently have it on the boat. I may sell it off to recoupe some of my money as I do not really need the tilt and trim it is just nice to have.
