Last year when I changed the oil in my lower unit, I purchased Mercury brand "High Performance Gear Lube +". I had a small amount left in the bottle, so when I decided to do it this year, I sent the wife out with the old bottle to one of the "Big Brand" stores. When she returned, they had sold her Quicksilver brand, "High Performance Gear Lube". I know that they are the same company, however, is it the same oil? I know you are not supposed to mix "Premium" with "High performance" but the lack of the "+" has me a bit confused. Thanks for the help.

Re: Gear Lube

No they are not the same product.
The Hi Performance is green and is newer than the Premium Blend which is a natural oil color. The Premium Blend is what was originally used in the 78 drives.
While it is fine to use in your drive, the Hi Performance is a synthetic, the Premium Blend is NOT. Don't mix them.

Re: Gear Lube

Guys,
Thanks for the response. Here's question that I forgot to ask in the thread. Can the Mercury "high perforamnce gear lube +" be mixed with the quicksilver "high perfomance gear lube"? I'm not aware if the Mercury product has some other additive that would not be compatable with the Quicksilver. Hence the "+". Thanks again

Re: Gear Lube

Quicksilver is a Merc name. Not sure why they ever did the 2 name thing, but the Hi Performance and The HP+ can be mixed together.

ASAIK Mercury/mercruiser sell their maintenance products under the Mercruiser and the Quicksilver brand - they are the same just different labeled.

I have used both Mercruiser oil filters (black) and Quicksilver oil filters (white) but acc to my mercruiser dealer there is no diff. just 2 brands of the same product

What I would like to know is do you have to use the Mercruiser/Quicksilver brand oils for the drive. I see many oils that state they can be used in Mercruiser drives and not void the warranty. I had a shaft seal go bad and drained all my drive oil out of the reservior and just wondering if I can refill with something other than the Mercruiser stuff
