Hello all!!! New to the site, but have done alot of research. I have a 1978 85hp evinrude. (85899c) And I noticed the other day that I have water coming out of the plastic exhaust cover. Now I'm not going to venture to fix it until I get my clymer in the mail, but from what I've researched I believe it could be one of two things. Either the cover seal or the exhaust housing seal. My question to all of you salty dogs is this. Is this going to be a quick and easy fix, or do I have alot of work in store for me? and Is there something that I've possibly overlooked that could be a different problem altogether? Just some additional info, the engine seems to run just fine (It ran approx: 1/2 hr. before I noticed the problem) I just have alot of water leaking out of the two holes on the plastic exhaust cover (right underneath the power head) Thanks all love the sight and keep up the great work!!!

Gary, are you referring to the two exhaust relief ports on the back of the midsection? The are just below the engine pan. If so, how much water is coming out?

Re: Water coming out of exhaust housing

Yeah I believe that's what they are. they are 2 small holes right underneath the power head (practically where the head and the exhaust housing meet) as to the amount of water coming out i would have to guess probably and this is just a guess about a gallon every 45 sec to a minute at idle. This is my first boat and for all that i know this could be normal and it's just that i haven't noticed it until recently. I've always been told to make sure i see the small stream of water coming from the water pump so I may have totally overlooked this other waterflow this whole time. Any help is greatly appreciated thank you.

After taking a second look at the blowup schematic I'm almost 99% certain they are the exhaust relief ports.

OK....when running, you will or should see a fine misty spray coming from the ports. This will increase some as the t-stats open. Normal thing.

Thanks for the help. But I just want to make sure, when I first started it up it wasn't a fine mist I mean it there was a decent amount of water coming out similar to a garden hose. Unfortunately I did'nt check it after the engine warmed up. Which I will do tomorrow. All help is greatly appreciated, Thank you.

You will want to make sure that both heads are coming to temp. and not running cold. If the t-stats are stuck open, you could see an appreciable amount of water coming from the relief ports especially at low rpms. So check both heads for temp next time out.

OBJ thanks alot you've been a great help!!! I believe that's what the problem is. after talking to my Father in law he came to the same conclusion. Tomorrow I'll take it out and check the temp. seeing that the stats are close to 30 years old I believe it might be time to replace them.... Thanks for all of your help again!!!
