leaky boat.. Cool seal?

Hello all.. i purchased an old alumicraft boat that had silicone on Every rivet, and every seam. I haven't had it in the water yet, but im sure it seeps some. I just want a close to shore craft with my 3 horse troller on it. My question is.. I have stripped all the silicone from it, and i want to seal it from the inside if possible. I have a couple gallons of aluminum roof coatiing left over, and was thinking if i sand it up good, could i use that stuff to seal it up from the inside out to waterproof it? the smaller the investment the better of course just because i paid so little for it, and it won't see heavy use. just want a lil troller. Thanks in advance..

Re: leaky boat.. Cool seal?

If it were my boat, I would remove all the silicone, then identify the actual leak points and address them. The rivets can be tightened using a simple tool and hammer.

I recall there being numerous posts about tightening the rivets on this forum. Use the search feature to search for posts with "rivet" in them.

I think that coating the boat with roof sealer would be a poor choice of solutions and really yuck up the boat.

Just my 2 cents.

cool seal don't work worth a toot on trailers, why would you want it in a boat. turn the hose on in the boat, and taking a sharpie, mark the rivets that are leaking. the with 2 hammers. someone in side holding the hammer against the rivet tap it from the outside. also there is a product called GULVIT that is the leaking aluminum boats best friend. coat the whole inside to above the water level. it's better than having wet feet, and a bailing can.

Re: leaky boat.. Cool seal?

I saw a gallon of gluv it at boaters world yesterday for 119 a gallon, so thats out. The rhino lining roll on stuff is also around 100 bucks for what i would need to cover the area. I paid 100 bucks for the boat, and a 3 horse motor (that runs awesome) I have it upright to collect rainwater from the nasty rain in the northeast today and tonight. Did not come with a trailer, so i cant really get a good look under it when full. light enough for me to load trucktop solo though..Hah.. Im full of issues eh? I did find a couple of small holes from wear on the bottom "fins" that i sealed with the JB Weld in a non flexible spot. If she holds rain water for a day, i may launch it close to shore and see what happens. I just figured that if that roof coating could seal and protect a tin/metal roof, it would do the same in an old boat. Think you guys are correct though.. Looks like messy stuff. Thanks

the roof stuff is suppose to form a total uniform coating, and the water is on top pushing down.and running off. in a boat the water is on the outside pushing in, causing it to turn loose, and bubble, and finally finding the weakest spot.

You can probably do the whole boat with a pint of gluvit. No need for the gallon size. $35 and you've got a tight boat.

Re: leaky boat.. Cool seal?

taking your advice, i bought a small can of the gluvit for 35 bucks. Just over half the can was able to seal around the inside seams nicely. Found a couple of small cracks in the process, and patched with the JB weld, and then painted with the Gluvit right over the top. SO.. Looks like i may have a tight little pond runner for short money. Thanks for the good advice.. I would recommend that stuff to anyone with a leak. I will finish cleaning off the silicone from the outside seams next, and finish off the can sealing that. Oh.. It dries clear...(well..mostly clear..) so it wont look horrible on the outside unpainted.
