Today I was taking my boat out for the first time for the season. I just got it back from being de-winterized on Friday. I started it at home to make sure all was working and it's leaking water from the cylinder that is on the BACK of the motor that the power steering fluid runs through and is cooled by fresh water. It looks like it was cracked before and fixed on the outlet side with JB WELD.

What is this part called and any suggestions would be great! Thanks.

It is the power steering cooler, and has a drain plug that needs draining for winterization. Is the plug in it?

Yes. Is this "cooler" required? Can I just bypass it?

If you have power steering, you need the cooler. Just get a new one or check on ebay for a used one.

Just fixed my last month on a 1993, 4.3 OMC Cobra. The beer can size canister had one end that had opened up over the winter, due to freezing. If you take it off, it just has to be soldered back together (not welded like I thought). This is if not of the inside tubing has been damaged. You should be able to pressurize the power steering fluid side of the cooler to see if any leaks exist after it is fixed... Not a hard thing to fix...
