V6 Black Max 150 question

I have a 1983 V6 150 Black Max on an 83 Ranger 350V, purchased last year in the fall. When I first took it out I couldn't get over 2000 RPM out of it and it smoked really bad. I took it in to a mechanic who said power packs were OK, installed new plugs, flushed out fuel tanks and put in new fuel, compression was within normal limits but found a wire shorting out.

I took the boat out one time last fall after all this. It ran great, only smoked when started up, responded well when opened up, planed out at 5200rpms, 52mph with a 21p 3 blade prop. I ran it about 3 miles with no problems. I winterized with stabil and fogged carbs.

I took it out for the first time today. It smoked when started but I let it warm up and burn out fogging oil. When I tried to run it I could only get 2000 rpm. Never could get boat to even think about coming up out of the water. It smoked continuously and when I tried to open it up it seemed to smother the engine out. Engine will rev without a load.

Is the next step rebuilding the carbs? Anyone have any ideas on where I can get floats for this age engine? Should I have run the engine longer than 10 minutes before trying to run it?

I appreciate any advice, I am asking everywhere before spending more money.

Re: V6 Black Max 150 question

Not likely the carbs. Too much down too fast.

If the wiring is deteriorating, I would look at an intermittent short or open in the stator, specifically one of the high speed charge coil windings.

hope it helps

Buy a spark-gap tester at the local auto parts store, they are less than $10 and it will tell you if you are having an issue there.

My wiring going from the switchboxes to the coils was deteriorating, I ended up replacing all of the wires there and from the coils to ground, solved lots of issues.
