I am new to boat repair but willing to try.

We have a 1976 searay with a type 1 outdrive that I attempted to rebuild the waterpump in. The pump wasn't a problem but I did something wrong when I reinstalled the lower unit. ( I only removed the lower unit not the whole outdrive) I tested the shift inside the boat and the lever seems to be working fine. I can put the boat into all three positions but the outdrive seems locked in forward gear. I assume that my problem has to do with the shift spline connection but I'm not quite sure how to tell what position it is in.

A friend showed me how to check the prop to be sure that I was in the right gear when I replaced the drive and I am reasonably sure that was right when the lower unit got installed.

Where did I go wrong ?

P.S. Just assume that I know nothing and don't be afraid to simplify anything you think I might not understand.

Thanks

you went wrong by posting an outdrive question in an outboard forum. you would have much better response if you asked the question in the right forum.;)
