I quit

It's been six weeks since I've smoked a cigarette so I guess I can finally say I quit. This comes from a man that's smoked for over 40 years.

No particular reason for stopping, I just figured it was passed time to quit.
Besides, a person can't smoke anywhere anymore.

Now for the cost savings. I was smoking the cheapest cigarettes on the market but now I don't smoke Marlboros, my favorite brand. Here locally Marlboros are $3.75/pack. I smoked about a carton and a half or so a week. So now I'm saving over $52.50 a week or $2730.00 a year.

Stopping is all the result of taking Chantix, a prescription medication to aid in cessation of smoking. I tried all the patches and other pills in the past and even tried hypnocist. None of them worked. Even taking the Chantix I really didn't want to quit but the desire to light up just gradually goes away.

So for anyone that wants to stop and has tried to do so in the past and failed, talk to your Doctor about Chantix. None of my friends ever thought I could quit.

Re: I quit

Great.

I am a former smoker but not a pest. I do not mind when people smoke around me outside and no place allows smoking inside.

It will continue to get easier. The tough spot is the 6 month mark..... promise yourself you will not cheat at all. It is easy to get back in the habit so don't even take one puff!

I have seen good results with the chantrix (I used commit). Whatever works.

Congrats.

Re: I quit

Congratulations Tyme2fish on quitting the smokes. I quit years ago it was hard but worth the effort. Might as well get on an exercise program now that you have quit, otherwise you will start to gain weight. It will be much easier now that your lungs have the capacity, as your not filling them up with smoke.

I was smoking about two packs a day at the time I quit, What helped me was carrying a package of sunflower seeds in my shirt pocket, every time I got the urge I would grab a few seeds rather than tear my shirt pocket off, don’t laugh it worked for me. Of course if your job is on the inside shells might be problem, as I drive a truck for a living I just let them fly off the passing windshields.

Congratulations! It is I hard thing to do (I know). In the beginning, other smokers smoke will not bother you. Give it a few years and all of the sudden you realize you don't like second hand smoke. In fact, it starts to bother you. I believe it takes a few years for someone to revert back to a non-smoker.

Good advice here!.....
What Mark said is I find especially true......
After time, you will realize what a nasty stinky expensive habit it is & you will wonder why you ever started in the first place!......;)
Good luck to you!.......:)

Re: I quit

Thanks for all the encouragement. Yeh, I think I've already put on a few pounds.
CHantix works by blocking the nicotine receptors in the brain. I've noticed that it also blocks alcohol receptors. By that, I mean that I'll pour out a Bourbon and water and the drink will just sit there. I'll take a small sip and set the glass down. Before I know it, the ice has all melted and the drink is 3/4 full. Weird.
So far I can tolerate smokers with no problem. However, at work, I can really smell the patients that have smoke odor. Live smoke smells OK. Old smoke doesn't.

Re: I quit

Congrat T2F! Now, let's see, I am guessing that you will save approximately $2730 a year by not smoking (not counting the extra food you will eat or the cost of the drugs to help you not smoke), but your lungs will be healthier and you will be able to fish longer and harder. And in 10 years you will have saved $27,300! Enough to get that new to you 21 ft bass boat!

Am I right? Am I the closest? Did I win the pack of line? Oh, that was another thread and another time! :D Congrats again, and keep up the good work!

In ten years, that used boat will cost $273,00.00 and a gallon of gas will be $30.00 with a ration ticket!!!! And NO!!! You don't win any line!!!

Re: I quit

I had a two-pack-a-day habit and was shocked to find out that I really was hooked. I just wanted to smoke no matter what and I hated myself for my lack of control. The one thing that really helped me to quit when I finally decided to take the bull by the horns, so to speak, was the advice that each craving only lasts for a few minutes. So you only have to wrestle with it for a few minutes each time. The next craving may come quickly, but if you can persist: the cravings get further and further apart untill they eventually go away completely. Over the years I loved the aroma when someone lit up, and then later hated the smell of cigarette smoke or a dirty ashtray and now don't care one way or another. After 12 years I don't want a smoke but I don't mind if someone smokes in my truck. Congratulations to all of you that have decided to take back control from nicotine and have toughed it out or are still fighting it. I know and appreciate how difficult it can be. You deserve a hearty pat on the back!

Re: I quit

This is one 2 year old thread that should be allowed to continue .... T2F, are you still smoke free? How did you make out in the long run? No judgement if you went back, but I'm just curious.
