Re: What Material To Use?

Assuming you have a conventional type production boat with wood stringers here's a rule of thumb laminate schedule that will work on most 18's using polyester resin.

1.5oz or 3oz mat/18oz or 24oz woven roven/1.5oz or 3oz mat/18oz or 24oz woven roven.

If you go with Anderson's book beware he makes some things more complicated than necessary. In many cases removing decks, making jigs etc can be avoided and save much labor.

Re: What Material To Use?

YES THEY ARE WOOD STRINGERS , IT IS A 1970 ELGIN 16FT FIBERGLASS

do have a good suggestion where to get the woven , i have cloth that would would. i also have mat, now can i use mat on the floor itself?

also i think of use epoxy to do this repair on the stringers and coat the floor on both sides with the expoxy .
ps dose any of the material have to be biaxial or anything a long those lines?

Google for a fiberglass supplier near you for fabric. Yes, you can use mat to skin and tab the floor in. Yes you can use epoxy but it requires a mat especially made for it. Epoxy won't fully saturate mat that's made for polyester. No, biaxial isn't structurally necessary at all for the job...but applying regular woven roven at an angle will give very similar structural properties if you already have woven roven on hand. Any wood surfaces that aren't glassed need to be coated...epoxy does it better than polyester.

1.5oz /18oz woven roven/1.5oz mat/18oz woven roven WITH THIS
work with epoxy if the material is made for epoxy from a structural point?

also the open bilge needs to reglassed ...what would one use in the bilge area as far as weight and material?

Re: What Material To Use?

That's a sturdy laminate schedule with standard polyester resin and very likely way heavier than your 16' Elgin (Sears) was built with. Epoxy res is stronger than polyester, so technically, less fabric is needed if you use it. I use the same laminate schedule no matter which resin it is. I like bulk and over building when doing stringers, floors and transoms. Don't get hung up on thinking there's just one way to do this stuff though. Many different combos and materials with get the same results. Low tech polyester with basic fabrics are probably easiest for first time glassers and certainly most cost effective.

For the open bilge between stringers? If you're just wanting to help revive some strength use one layer of mat...1.5 oz or 3 oz.
