Im told theres a kit for sale that has a rubber cap for the oil line connector, and plug for the harness connector. ANyone know where I can purchase this kit (assuming it exists)??

My VRO is bypassed, but the rubber plug looks a bit weathered, so Id like to replace. Also, I would like to have the piece that plugs into the open wire harness..
Thanks.

Re: VRO Bypass Kit

You don't say what motor you are working on, but let's say it was a 1990 55HP. Your service manual, part#507872, would read on page #2-27:

"If the VRO2 system is not used, follow the following procedure:

*Install protective cap, P/N 315391, over the oil inlet fitting to protect the VRO2 pump. Secure with clamp P/N 322654.

*Disconnect the VRO2 wiring harness. Seal engine harness Amphenol connector with cover, P/N 513366."

Re: VRO Bypass Kit

The VRO was a sketchy thing when Evinrude first developed it around 1984. It underwent about 9 different versions each one becoming more reliable. Mainly the original problem was the oil being used wasn't being pumped effectively and the motors were not lubricated properly. A lot of mechanics I speak to today who believe the VRO is a viable thing that can work properly all say if you use the proper oil, you shouldn't have a problem. Most mechanics will say simply bypass the VRO oil pump part and pre-mix the gas and oil in the fuel tank. The VRO pump mixes the oil and gas inside the unit and sends it into a common line that feeds the carbs. The VRO is not only an oil pump, but a fuel pump so it needs to remain installed to pump fuel to the carbs. A neighbor of a friend of mine is replacing the original VRO pump on a 1985 Evinrude as we speak. Not all VRO's are horrendous things that destroy motors but it has a bad reputation just like FICHT does with Evinrude as well.

I bought the motor used, and it had been bypassed already....But the rubber cap on the oil line looks like its getting old.

I have always run older motors, so I dont miss what I never had (oil injection).
