The block i was thinking about using doesn't have a provision for a mech fuel pump.Do they make an electric one that is marine grade for a carbed engine?
The engine in question is a 1986 mercruiser 5.7 liter 4bbl

That is a very common aftermarket pump. You just have to make sure it gets wired in correctly with an oil pressure switch for safety.

I'm sorta Guessing here,......
But,.......You Might be headed for an Issue, if you're going from a 2 piece rear main seal motor,.....
To a 1 piece seal motor.........

The Flywheels,+ possibly the Coupler might be a Different bolt pattern.....

Re: Do they make a marine grade electric fuel pump for a carb engine?

I recently purchased same electric fuel pump on EBay to replace mechanical pump for my 1984, 260 Mercuusier. In my case I needed to add the Pressure Safety switch Don mentions in his post. I went to NAPA and bought the A-68301 switch ($15.00) suggested in the directions with the electric pump. I also needed to purchase a brass tee and nipple as I will need both the original Pressure switch (so my oil pressure gauge will function) and the Pressure Safety switch.

I had to build my motor becuase the first block froze to death...(cracked) the new block did not have the manulae pump on the side of the block. I used a fuel pump from Car quest. Have been for 3 years.....works great. It will hold the fuel in the pump ready for use if the line is backup....so it running all day and not useing the fuel doesn't hurt it. I have a 4.3 The pump was around 30 dolloars. I wired it to the run position of my key switch.

Sounds to me like everything you did to your fuel system is either dangerous, or illegal. (automotive fuel pump, improperly wired fuel pump)
While it will work, your boat is an accident waiting to happen.

Hey capecodder...did you wire yours in yet.

I have an electric pump wired incorrectly....Don has been walking me through fixing it...just curious if you had completed yours succesfully yet or not.

By the way do you have a two battery setup?

Re: Do they make a marine grade electric fuel pump for a carb engine?

I went through an engine upgrade 3 years ago on my 26 dancer and converted to a marine electric fuel pump that is wired into an oil pressure switch so that in only comes on when the oil pressure comes up...I mounted it on the wood support next to the gas tank and used only stainless braided fuel lines to insure spinning belts would not create problems...The pump is pricey at over 100 bucks...I have an extra one because I had a problem last year and I assumed it was the pump...In was in reality the oil pump pressure switch...dang...!! Couldn't return in it because it's electrical, let me know if there's interest.

I run a electric Mallory 140 gph marine fuel pump on my Gen VI 502, wired thru an oil pressure switch. Regulator set for 7-1/2 lbs feeding a marine 850 double pumper. Pump & switch easily available from summit racing or Jegs

No I have not installed yet...Will try and get to it this weekend. If you purchase the Carter universal fuel pump (the link to EBay) it comes with wiring diagram which looks pretty simple to follow and the Pressure Safety Switch also comes with same wiring instructions...By the way, the fuel pump on EBay is the best price I have found for that specific fuel pump. If you are running a stock carbureated small block, this is the electric pump to use, so I've been told .....Yes, I have a two battery systems.

Re: Do they make a marine grade electric fuel pump for a carb engine?

Just curious why can't a auto electric fuel pump be used if it's sealed?
I was down at the local auto store and i was looking at there electric fuel pumps. They are a sealed unit. The one they carry for 30 bucks looks exactly like that carter one on ebay. The whole pump is in an housing and it's sealed.i did order the carter one.I'm just wondering if it's the same pump but since they have marine stamped on the carter one they can charge more..lol
