I am looking for several pieces of information.

A) a description/diagram of the wiring connection on the motor, there are 4 prongs, i know one is positive, one is negative for the electric start, but what are the others.

B) What is the correct fuel mix for this motor?

Also, as a side question. How easy/difficult is it to come by the remote throttle and remote steering linkages/cables for thist type of unit.

Thanks,
Jeremiah

Two large pins for + to starter and - to ground. One small pin for electric choke. Other small pin completes the start button circuit to ground.

Fuel mix is 24:1

Remote controls show up on e-bay all the time. You need the two lever control, either the Evinrude Simplex, Johnson Ship Master, or Gale Bos'un. They are all the same except for the decal.

However, there are the early style and later style. The later ones are better. Whichever one you get, make sure you get the whole thing!! That means with the cables, even if the cables are junk or wrong length. You need the ends off the cables. No cables, no ends, no hookup.

Hi Jeremiah,
I have an earlier 18 and here is what it has...

Heavy gauge, red, STARTER POSITIVE POST
Heavy gauge, black, MOTOR BLOCK NEGATIVE
Lighter gauge, red (should be), CHOKE SOLENOID

I'm not sure what your fourth wire should do, as the solenoid is external to the motor and I don't think your motor has a kill circuit. If it does have a kill circuit, the fourth wire is probably for that purpose...

Thanks Gentlemen.
On the Evinrude Simlex control system, this would be the throttle and shifter, but what about left/right steering control?

I have some ideas in my head to engineer a lever driven steering system, which would be easier for my specific boat, but... if there is already a control for this, that would be great.

Thanks!

Re: 1958 Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin

I almost forgot. My plan is this, i have a keyed ignition switch already hooked up- i plan on wiring them up to the Evinrude just like any other motor, Pos/Neg wiring, bypassing the harness that Evinrude has, so that i can use my keyed ignition switch, and not have to worry about scraping up the harness connector for it.

See any problems with that?

Thanks again!

The key won't operate the ignition on/off unless you run more wires. But it can be used to start the motor.

Some of the 50's models with remote control/steering used the electric choke button to stop the engine. Not quite as quick as later models, but it worked.
