2005 9.9 Yamaha starter problem

My starter pinon gear sometimes engages very harshley with the flywheel. It is if the flywheel stops just over the pinon gear of the starter and the pinon gear wont mesh just right with the flywheel. The engine will start but sometimes I have this really loud clang when the two gears don;t mesh just right. Any ideas. Motor is a 2005 and on a sailboat so doesn;t get used a lot.

Lubricate the shaft the bendix gear rides on and be sure the battery is hot.

Thanks for the quick reply. The battery is new and is fully charged. I will try your suggestion on lube of the shaft. I will post results.
