listing to port

hello guys, this is my first post on this forum so hopefully all goes well.

the issue:

i have a 1973 starcraft capri, 15' fiberglass tri-hull, open bow walk through with an 85hp evinrude omc. motor runs great, no issues there. when on plane, i have a serious list to port. i have checked the weight balance of items in the boat, i have changed props, nothing helps. i have also ruled out a "hook" in the hull. the only thing that is left is, the port side hydrofoil fin is bent slightly. about 3/8" from front to back.

could this be the problem and if so, how do i fix it?

if not, whats next?

thanks again for your help. any info is appreciated.

Re: listing to port

If what you're saying is thst the boat wants to pull to the port side when underway, and it steers hard to starboard, I'd suspect the the trim tab (directly over the propeller) is out of adjustment.

If this is the case, move the trim tab in 1/8" segments towards the direction of the pulling (port/left) untill you reach a neutralized point.

Re: listing to port

thanks joe, the boat actually leans to the port side. the steering is fine i just can figure out why it leans to port when on plane. anything less than plane, even if im "plowing" with the bow up in the air its fine. the minute the bow drops and the boat planes out, it leans.

Remove the hydrofoil. I bet the list will go away! I had the exact problem with a Stingray hydrofoil. Took it off problem solved.Bought Smart Tabs and what a difference.I'll never use a foil again.

Yep.... If you're not encountering a torque problem, Gary's thoughts are the route I'd take.

okay maybe i called it the wrong thing, oops, but the hydrofoil fin isnt removeable. im talking about the two horizontal fins on the lowr half of the motor right above the prop. the fins that you would actually mount a removeable hydrofoil to. hope this helps.

Re: listing to port

that is the AV antiventilation plate. try trimming the motor away from the boat. if no power trim. move the trim pin out 1 hole at a times. sounds like it is trimmed to far in pushing the bow down when on plane. also the av plate should be in line with the bottom of the boat or 1 inch higher. take a straight edge, place it on the keel extended out from the boat. the av plate should be horizonal, with the straight edge.

Sehoner..... Assuming that this rig is new to you, that is you haven't had it for a few years and all was well, then this problem suddenly popped up, and reading thru all the above again...... my thoughts are that the engine is mounted off center of the transom.

Move the mother in-law to the starboard side.

My boat did the same thing your describing, what I found upon closer inspection was that the top of my transom wasn't completely level so I shimmed one side so the motor was inline with the centre line, it used to angle to port slightly before I shimmed it. after that I just set the trim and it rides straight as an arrow now.

sehoner,

I had the same problem with a 17' Wallcraft. Trim tabs solved the list.

Good luck.

Re: listing to port

First I found the center of the transom, from the actual sides of the hull not just by measuring the transom. Then I used a chalk line and made a line from the center mark to the keel. then I lowered my motor and visually inspected it from a few angles and noticed when it was in the down position it was actually 3/8" off the center line I made so I loosened the mounts and started to shim the starboard side untill the leg of the motor was inline with my center line. then I ightened the mounts back up and hit the lake.
