My new 55 Minnkota Terrova arrived and after mounting on the boat, I find when the propeller is turning, it makes a significant rattle which grows louder with higher RPMs. Even with the prop off. this is all out of the water. I found that when I loosened the thru-bolts a bit the rattle got lower and lower until it reached "normal". I know the rattle was WAY above normal. Is it OK to loosen the thru-bolts a half turn or so?

Re: MinnKota Terrova Rattle

Are you talking about the long bolts holding the motor together? If so... No, don't loosen them. They have seals around the bolt heads and they hold the face tight which has an O-ring around it. Are you hearing a "rattle" or a "click"? If it is clicking it usually means that the face or end cap is crooked and the long bolts are hitting the armature as it spins. Straighten it all out and retighten. Hope this helps.

Re: MinnKota Terrova Rattle

The Terrova makes a consistent noise when the prop turns, when the long bolts are in the original tightened position. It is not a click. I have had several trolling motors and this is LOUD. When I back off one of the long bolts about two revs, the noise gets to normal. The noise goes down with each incremental backoff.

What needs to be done or straightened out to get this back to normal? And if I loosen the long bolts, is there oil inside the motor?
