On a 95 Bayliner Capri 1700. Long story short, it didn't feel as powerful on its first outing for the year. I didn't think much of it. I ran some seafoam in the gas, no improvement. I let my brother use it the next weekend. He says it the water pump died and it wouldn't run any more.

The shop just tore it down this week. The rings are gone on #2 and #4, so the cyliner walls are scratched up. It will need machined and new pistons, as well as a water pump. I'm told the carbeurators were clogged from sitting too much during the winter (I only ran it three times, it sat from the first week in february through mid-April)

I want to know if its okay to just replace those two pistons. Will it still run smoothly? Also, does it make sense that it didn't have enough fuel and oil? I just want to know what happened because it doesn't make sense that 2 and 4 would be gone, when they run on different carbs (right?).

#2 and #4 doesn't make a lot of sense, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Carbs probably not clogged from sitting too long, just bad gas, or dirty gas, that clogged up the carbs.

You can replace just the 2 cylinders.
BUT, I would have them put new rings on the other two pistons as well.
Shouldn't cost too much more, as they will have it all tore down anyway.

So, a combination of things, lean carb condition, bad water pump.
Hard to tell if the rings might have been damaged before the meltdown.

Rebuild the carbs.
2 new pistons.
all new rings
new water pump

run Seafoam in your gas to keep the fuel system clean

And DECARB at least once a year to keep the rings freed up. This is a maintenance item mentioned in your owners manual.
