Hi,
I got a EMac computer the other day. It's great!!! Change is good
Anyways, my cousin wants to buy one now.
We found one locally, for a $250, but I don't know anything about Mac's
How would we check that it worked correctly, before my cous goes and spends his money on this machine?
I'm going to go with him when he looks at it.
Thanks,
Brother Chris.

One option would be to use the diagnostic disk(s) that usually come with a computer.

Apple computers usually come with System and Apple Hardware Test disks. If the original owner bought the AppleCare Protection Plan, that also includes a "TechTool Deluxe" (diagnostic program) disc.

1. Check to see if the operating system has been upgraded significantly from the version printed on the original system disc. (Click on Apple Menu>About this Mac to see the version of the OS currently installed and compare it to the system disk version).

If the Operating System has been upgraded significantly (i.e., System Disk shows v.10.3, and the computer is running 10.4.9), don't boot off the old system or diagnostic disks. Instead, take the computer to the "Genius Bar" at a Mac Store or some other qualified tech (for the "genius bar", you might want to go online to set an appt. first) and pay them to run a hardware diagnostic. They'll have the right version of diagnostic tools available.

If the Operating System/firmware has not been upgraded, boot the machine from either the Tech Tool Deluxe CD or the Apple Hardware Diagnostic CD, and run the tests. (To boot the computer from a CD or DVD, insert the disk, turn on the computer, and hold down the "C" key while the computer boots up).

If possible, also take a day-long class to learn OSX and any trouble-shooting techniques (this advice would apply to any brand computer). Most problems are easily addressed. Once you go Mac, you never go back.

Best test is to drop it 10 feet.

Thanks Bob, for the info. I'll print your response and take it with me when we go meet the fellow.
I agree...Mac is a much better machine than a PC. I use a PC at work and only my Mac at home. Mac's just take a bit of time to learn how to use them.

Hey BC,

Just one clarification, I meant "insert the CD and REBOOT the computer while pressing the "C" key (kind of hard to insert a CD when the computer is off!).

Sorry about the imprecise language. Good luck!
