Last week I saw a post with a photo that mentioned on an Evinrude 88 Spl the idle speed adjustment screw should have rubber tip. I've spent a hour searching the forum today and can't find that post. Ugh.

It seems this tip is missing from my idle speed adjustment screw so that when I throttle the engine back to neutral, it just dies. The engine won't idle at all in dead neutral.

I performed a "field expedient repair" with a plastic wire nut and the engine idled better yesterday at the lake, so that might have been my problem.

Can anyone help me find that photo? If I order an new Idle speed adjustment screw, will it come with that tip? The diagrams don't seem to show that piece. Does anyone have a better idea for a "home repair" than my wire nut which eventually will come off?
Thanks

as you can see in the top of this picture. my 88 spl has lost it's tip also. and my bolt is bottomed out. thought about just taking it out, and going to the tool and fastener store and getting a longer one. also the lock nut is missing on the linkage adjustment, which is now replaced.

The idle screw is the long one at the top of the photo correct? Yes, I'll need a much longer one to do away with the wire nut.

Also this photo has me looking at the Bushing on the Throttle Lever - the bushing inside the curved slot. It looks like your bushing fits pretty snug. There is a lot of slop (free play) on my engine between the bushing and its slop. How much free play should their be?

I've ordered my manuals and hopefully they'll be here this week.

Maybe a large vacuum cap would work. You could also carefully bend the "ear" toward the bolt. I read in an old post that if your idle adjustment is in that far there is likely a problem in the idle circuits. But, both of my V4s are adjusted similarly.

i'm not bending mine. snap and your screwed. the bush is fairly tight, should not have slop. my engine only has 70 hours on it. unheard of for a 1988.

Well a mechanic figured out my idle problem. Seems that the fuel primer/enrichment solenoid was shot and was pumping gas into the carb all the time. The idle screw had been turned way up to get the carb to process the extra fuel without choking out. $160 plus labor.

I recon the indictaor for this might have been the fuel bulb. It would fill up, but never get tight to the point of "ok, I should stop now". Now when the bulb gets tight it feels like you've reached a stopping point.

Idles fine now
