I started my 1988 merc 60 for the first time yesterday in the driveway with muffs and garden hose attached. Water was being blown out with the exhaust immediately after start up, but it took about 30 seconds for the tell tale to start pissing, is this normal?

Re: Tell tale question

normal? yes and no. muffs don't give it the greatest water supply, a lot of the water blows out of the sides of the cups. a barrel gives you a better indication of waterpump. if its been 2 years or more since the impellor was changed then change it instead of wondering as its life is almost up.

Re: Tell tale question

Pretty easy job to do and cheap insurance. Be sure to buy only what you need i.e an impeller and not the whole water pump kit (at around 4 time the prise) = useless.

For your telltale not squirting water before 30 sec., could be related with the themostat that open when it reach the correct temp. (140 F).

Let us know how it's going...

PS: BTW, i send you a PM regarding your 1993 60hp...
