I have a 1953 Evinrude 1HP Outboard on my 1962 Dorsett. Its start, runs , and idles fine for the most part. It goes into gear good and runs great a low speeds, but as I increase the throttle, the motor will kick, or jerk intermittently. Sometimes it start immediatly, sometimes after five minutes. It seems to only happen when the throttle is past 1/4.

Any ideas?

You are describing a motor with a worn out clutch dog and forward gear. It comes out of gear, rotates 180 degrees and slams back into gear.

Now, having said that there must be a typo in your question. I don't think there was a 1953 1hp, and if there was it certainly wouldn't have a gearshift. Please clarify.

Correction 15HP Evinrude.

Is there a fix?

Sure, replace worn parts. Might be a bit of a problem finding them for a '53, I haven't looked. Won't be cheap, especially if you need the gear.
