Engine cutting out

I have a small 3hp yamaha marainer ob. I got the engine at a boat jumble. I was told it was a runner, and it appears pretty good for its age. But when I twist the throttle it revs up and then stalls.Any ideas.

Fuel flow problem? Maybe its just getting enough fuel to idle but when you increase the RPM's it cant supply enough fuel. Does it rev up, bog down, and stall? Or does it just immediatly cut out? If it just immediatly cuts out I would say its an electrical problem.

Im no mechanic so dont go out and start ripping your engine apart

Thanks for the advice.I suspect that its a fuel problem as it revs up and then races on and then dies.
Will investigate.

High possibility of a fuel restriction. Need to start with the carb and clean it properly.
