ok heres the deal having my foot rebuilt, should be done tomorrow or sat. my question is if i hook water up on a 75hp johnson through the pee hole, would it be safe to run motor without foot attached? i need to do some fine tuning to the carbs, and i want to take the boat out sat for a test run before father's day, b/c were gonna take it out on sunday.

Nope, but if you look up in the leg you will find the water tube that goes into the waterpump housing. Put a hose on that.

I would think that it would not be a good idea to tune the motor without the leg. It would change the exhaust tuning and most likely be all wrong when in the water.

well you know, you might have a good point. I didnt think of that. but there are a few other issures that i need to work out. so i guess it would be ok to do that with out the foot. but hopefully i'll get my foot back tomorrow and be able to back on the water soon. thanks for your help

I understand this as you are attempting to not only run your engine, but tune your engine without the lower unit.

a) it wont tune out right out of the water even with the lower unit, the exhaust pressure will be all off

b) You have no water pump without the lower unit

it is impossible to tune a motor on muffs, or a hose connected to the water tube. the reason is: there is no backpressure on the exhaust. on muffs you will think it is perfect, get in the water and it will not start. you can get close on muffs, but idle has to be set high, around 850+-, then in the water you set the idle to 650-700 with the engine, IN GEAR, not neutral. i hear over & over my motor stalls when i put it in gear. it's not set right.

I'm gonna differ. Most all motors can be tuned on muffs or even with the lower unit off. Dealers do it all the time. Some minor adjustments may have to be done on the water, but the basic tune and link&sync can be done on land.
