Transom - Up or down in water?

Hey all. I live on a lake in Indiana and this is only my third year of boating. I tend to raise my transom every time I dock for the day. I've noticed though that there are a lot of boaters on the lake that never raise their transoms out of the water all season long. What is the pros and cons to having your engine up or down while on the water?
Thanks, Tim

if you have and inboard outboard, it is best to store with outdrive down, and tilted up puts stress on the bellows. the rubber things around the outdrive to the transom. it also allow the water to drain out.

If it's an outboard, tilt it up to cut down on the build-up. In freezing weather, always leave it tilted down no matter if it's in the water or not...

Just so you are informed, the "transom" is the part of the boat that the outboard moter mounts upon, or the the outdrive of a inboard outboard mounts through... The transon doesn't actually move....

Then you really don't have to worry about how to store it, kinda takes care of itself at that point!!!

What kind of boat/motor do you have Tim?

Studlymandingo,
I have a 28' pontoon with a 1982 60hp johnson. Should I raise the motor out of the water each time or leave it in the water? I have to do this manually seeing that I don't have tilt and trim.
Thanks.

Tashasdaddy,
What if there's a lot of silt in my cove? Would it have less built up if I left it up?
