RPMs backing down

About one year ago my 2001 saltwater series 2 stroke 200 hp Yamaha started not holding at 48 rpm and above. At 47 rpm and below it runs like a champ. The mechanic tried everything and when he draineed some white very thick liquiud from the oil/fuel mixing chamber he thought I just had a bad load of gas. It seemed possible because we had just returned from a trip and had to buy gas from a very out of the way marina. He suggested 2 "shock" treatments of ring-free, continued use of ring-free, discontinuing use of Yamalube (all that I had ever used in it) and use of Premium Quick-silver. I have gone through many tanks of gas in a year but the problem persists. Strangely, if it backs down and then I go back to neutral and start again, most of ther time the problem goes away bit not always. I do not run at more than 44-47 rpms normally but am concerned that there may be a problem I should further address. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: RPMs backing down

Sounds like nothing more than a fuel filter problem. I would either change all filters or if you don't have an external unit install one. Obviously you're getting plenty of air and spark - so what's left? Get into the fuel pickup line and screen and have a good look at that. Just might something there.
