hello all i was itchin to get in the water this weekend i had my carbs removed and cleaned yesterday i installed them and could not get a pop at all i poured a little fuel through one of the sparkplug holes and it fired up right away then i tryed it again without the prime and no go i think i made the starter hot becuz it refused to crank anymore after that ..i was so sick of picking at it and getting sunburned doing so that i took the fuel and put in my fathers boat so i could get a ride in b4 dark so i havnet touched it since just wondring where or what else to look for the boat its self is 50 miles or more from my house so it costs me a bit of money and time to work on it its really getting my goat ..im thinking maybe remove the fuel pump next time or prime from the begining so i dont over heat my starter again.....
one more thing what are anyones thoughts on a 99 90hp mariner i found out about one today for a good deal might check it out when the guy gets home

You don't want to use straight fuel in the motor as that could cause damage to the motor. It needs to be a 50:1 premix.

Did it start before you removed the carbs?

When you prime the bulb, does it stay firm? If not, could be that the fuel pump needs to be rebuilt.

Is gas leaking out of the front of the carbs when you prime it? Could mean a stuck float

i primed with premix ..and no i wouldnt put raw gas in ........it started last season but i was geting gas runnin out the over flow on the bottom and top carbs it would start right up but one only turn up to a low rpm (NO TACH) i checked throtle linkages for slippage all looked fine so over the winter i bought some spare carbs had them cleaned and i installed them this weekend ...i did get a little gas come through the carbs when i 1st pumped up the bulb but it soon stopped and the bulb felt tight ..so i take it a low presssure bulb would indicate fuel pump probs?? thanks for your responce i love any and all input keep it commin':)

If you removed, cleaned and replaced the carbs, you need to linc n' sync the engine before trying to start it.

It sounds like multiple problems here to me.

A direct charge of fuel in the cylinder that fires indicates you have spark in that particular hole, (hard tellin' about the timing of the fire), and a fuel blockage from somewhere since it does not fire the mixture from the carbs. Did you totally clean every passage in every carb?

If you have a pin hole in the diaphram of the fuel pump you would not get a firm bulb, (as Plainsman states).

My starters on my inlines never heat up to the point where the starters will not function. So: R and R the starter, as long as the compression is even in all six holes, (which ya hopefully checked prior to messin' with the carbs)!! BTW: if your timing is way off from working on the engine, that does make a starter work much harder. If the fuel pump has a good diaphram and you verify it pumps juice and you don't get fuel to the crank case then take the carbs back off and properly clean all passages and rebuild them. BTW: check to make sure every plug has fire if your engine does not have a distributor. Then linc & sync the engine and she should fire on time and run. These engines are simple: compression, fuel, and fire at the right time and: boom off ya go. Hope that helps. JR

Hi , check if you have good spark on the spark plugs , if the motor is siting a while without being used and you have a distributor pul it down and if its got corosion on the coper pins inside the cap (proberly it wil), clean the coper pins and rotor points with sanding paper grid 800 / 1200 and , do not sandpaper the rotor where the the center carbon touches the rotor ,or els the carbon wil wear down very fast and make a mes , but clean with carbcleaner on Qtips, maybe some wet soaked sanding paper grid 1500 winded on the gum on the back of a pencil and some patience , the center carbon in the distributorcap has to move freely , do not try to remove rotor ,rotor is integrally cast onto the distributor shaft and is non-replaceable; you have to buy the entire shaft & rotor assy. Not cheap, either! ,if you try you wil get it broken , no need to remove rotor .Another thing that caused my sixinline not to start was a good battery , the old battery would crank the engine good but wont start , replaced the battery with a brand new one and it fired up right away .good luck and keep us posted
