Any Tricks...Trim Gauge Sensor Wires?

I have a Merc Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive. My Trim Level Sensor wires have finally given out (the boat is a near perfect 1985 SeaRay 195 BR with about 250 original hours). I just spoke with my mechanic and to replace the sensor requires a kit and total removal of the outdrive and bellows. Total cost will be north of $500. Besides running without the trim gauge working...is there any way around this? I understand splicing the rotted wires is probably not a very good solution.
Please advise if you have any other tips, or tricks.

Best regards.

Sounds like it's worth a try. Thanks for finding this information. I will get better at navigating these threads eventually.
