Hi to everyone first of all

I have a Johnson motor and on the Cowling cover it says 60hp, but I took it to a shop and they told me it was a 55hp 1969 model... my question actually is this..
The motor started to run rough and cuts out as I shift into gears as well as having hard time starting and sometimes , just sometimes it cuts out on idle, but usually when putin gear..
I use a 50/1 oil mixture..
it is a 3 cyclinder engine, placed new plugs on it, but didnt gap them as it stated pre-gapped.
When I took it into the shop they told me that it needed a distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, points.. mostly everything under the Flywheel..
Now my dilemma is since i popped the flywheel off, what should the points be adjusted to .010 ?
since i am not considering spending the amount of cash he wanted to repair it..
any help, diagrams etc would be very much appreciated..
Thank You
Nicky

Re: Help

We had that problem with our Johnson 135hp...and it turned out to be the throttle cable.

Re: Help

Since they don't carry any appreciable current, the points don't burn and pit like "normal" ones do. So, except for mechanical wear, they don't need replacing. Points gap is .010". No more and no less. Except add a thou for new points. Check all plug wires for continuity. Put a THIN bead of EP grease on the anti-reverse ring where it rides on the shaft. Make sure the cap and rotor don't have any cracks or tracks in it, and are clean. All battery and wire connections must be clean and tight or you risk frying the amplifier. Don't just look at the battery cables and assume, clean them shiny bright.

What plugs did you put in? If surface gaps, take them back out and trash them. Or find somebody you don't like and give them to them. Use QL77JC4 gapped at .030 to .040.

Make sure flywheel and crank tapers are clean and dry and torque flywheel nut to 70-85 ft/lbs. (important).

Re: Help

You guys are awsome, quick reply... I am going to enjoy being here , and hopefully help out as well..
Thank You..
Thank You for the Link Tashasdaddy, and Thank You imported f_r.

The points do have a bit of oxidization or darkening, can I clean it with a bit of emery cloth... and then regap everything..
and the plugs are the QL7JC4..I just hope I can get it working properly without having to Pull it like last time through the water.. hate doing that with kids scared they are stranded. lol
I will try all of those suggested..
Any help is and has been appreciated.

now another ok maybe a weirder question.. is there a specific tightness or anything for the throttle cable... since TNT mentioned it.. I mean it is on there tight but maybe I missed something...
