Approx. weight of 2.5L/3.0L Stern Drive?

I'm helping a friend fix up an old boat... I don't recall the hull manufacturer but it's a 14' fiberglass v hull from the mid-60s and currently has a 80hp Mercruiser (Renault engine) that's stuck and seems like it's going to difficult to find parts for. So, we're looking at the possibility of swapping in a complete new engine/drive, and have found a running 3.0L in a owner-abandoned boat (no title) that we're probably going to go check out within the next few days.

My question is, approximately how much does one of the 2.5/3.0L setups weigh? Also is there an appreciable difference in weight between the 2.5 and 3.0? Are these normally iron blocks? The Renault is aluminum with iron cylinder sleeves... haven't had it out so don't know what it weighs, but seemed pretty light.

He's concerned the 3.0L would be too heavy and/or too much power, so we're trying to determine if this is a viable option or if we should hold out to find a 2.5 (or other yet undiscovered options).

Wow... that's definitely heavier than I anticipated. Any idea how much lighter the 2.5 is? (I looked around the Mercury site, but apparently they don't make 2.5s anymore?)

Thanks. We checked out the 3.0L Mercruiser setup last night and it seems to be in pretty good shape... need to take a few more measurements to make sure it will fit but think we're probably going to give it a shot. It was about dark when we were there last night and it didn't have a battery so we haven't checked compression yet, but it was apparently winterized before it was parked and they said they got it running on a hose with no problem after they bought it about a month ago. It's in a 1990 Glasport 20' cuddy that sat outside for ~6 years (floor is REALLY bad) and was sold the current owner as abandoned property (no title). They want $600 and it comes with a pretty nice galvanized trailer, which seems like a fairly equitable deal to me.

I was also mistaken about the size of my friend's boat--it's actually a 16' rather than a 14, and was made by Newman Industries in Miami Oklahoma.

used trailers are $1200 around here - galvanized prolly $1500

A 2.5 would be about 1 pound heavier than a 3.0 as the cylinders are not bored as large.

Offer them $500, sell the trailer for $1500.

Make a quick grand and you get to keep the drive package.
