99 175 motor blown or not

im looking to buy 1999 nitro with a 175 efi merc motor owner says motor blown i looked at motor what i see is no prop saft is broke off clean owner thinks he hit something but said all that happened was engine reved high and shut down did not feel bump as if he had hit object and skeg not damaged at all he took boat to service center and service writer not mechanic picked a piece of metal from lower unit and said it was part of piston skirt can anyone tell me if this possible thanks for any and all advice

If that indeed happened, that motor had better be cheap as both the engine and lower unit need rebuilding.

what im wondering is it possible for piston skirt to get thru to lower unit

Depends on how big the piece was. It's the piston that covers and uncovers the exhaust port. The skirt would have had to broken off near the top of the stroke to get into the exhaust port. It could then work its way down the exhaust tuner and into the lower unit. The next question is how much damage it did to the cylinder wall and port area.

i guess the next step would be to tear down i just could not imagine skirt getting to bottom i guess i was just hoping for lower damage only thanks for your help this helps a alot in making offer

pulled head motor trashed looking to buy complete engine have found one owner stats that its a 150 175 motor says all componets are 175 except for ecm can anyone tell me what this means
