Hi; I just got my 92 90 hp VRO back from the shop. It was recently rebuilt and quit on the water after about 3 hours...died altogether...no spark!
The shop diagnosed a faulty powerpack and replaced it with a new one and it has come back to life....
HOWEVER...
after running it for 10 minutes on the muffs in the driveway I noted the right (starboard) bank was hotter than the left by touch...I checked it with my laser temp gun and saw..
....137 degrees f on the right side
.....92 degrees f on the left side
.....the telltale (pee stream) is cool
The shop told me that one side (the hadn't said which) was running too hot and they replaced the thermostat (they had been the originals)...would that have been the left one that is now too cold?...what now is this OK or should this be fixed so they both run the same temp?

sounds like the left side tsat is suck open, and needs to be replaced. 137 is the correct operating temperature.

I'm sorry but a shop only installing one thermostat!? That's just ridiculous... especially considering how much of a ***** it is to service the damn things.

I had the exact same problem on my 1984 140hp and it was stuck stats... I replaced both last night without drilling or removing the power head. Three hours of cursing and cramped working conditions. I am still bitter about it.

They need to run the same temperature, cold running causes excess carbon and rough idle. Take it to the shop and have them replace the other one, and swiftly kick them all in the testicles for not replacing both the first time through. Seriously.

I have a gauge and sender hooked up to both the right and left cylinder banks. The right side always runs about 10 degrees warmer than the left.I have heard this is the case with these V4 engines.Mine is a 1989 115.

Yes, starboard usually runs 10 degrees hotter than the port side... at least in crossflow engines, I believe in loop charged engines as well.

So by "same temperature" I mean, like, not 130 and 90.

I called them and the boss whined and weaseled a bit suggesting that wasn't abnormal ON THE MUFFS then said bring it in and he'll change the other one as well (it was the right one that was too hot and was changed)...the left one is too cold (is the original).
I hate having to make these return trips for service but at least this time I hadn't dragged it all the way to Kenora Ontario and then had to drag it back.
I am having the shop that rebuilt it do the work since it has a one year warranty.
