Johnson Super Seahorse 35???

I picked up an old boat for a few bucks tonight. Gotta go back this weekend and dig it out. This guys grandad had it in a huge dry concrete floor shed. Last registration is 1977 and he says he believes that is the last time it was on the water. It has a Johnson Super Seahorse 35 on it. The boat and motor look EXCELLENT from what i can see. Stuff piled all around it though. Trailer tires are flat but no big deal.

Besides tearing the carb down and rebuilding it what else should i look for? The guy was a mechanic by trade and everything in the garage looks to be WELL taken care of so i expect no less for the boat and motor. I thought about fogging the cylinders with WD-40 right away, tearing the carb down and doing a compression check. If all checks out try starting it. Would the crankshaft seals need to be replaced from age?? The water pump will be changed for sure. Where is the best source for old Johnson parts?? Thanks in advance....................

R Johnson may turn the down, but i love them. 1st post the model number, so we can date it. don't tear into it until we find this out. i just reconditioned a 1958 35. tilt it up, and out some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders, and let it sit a couple of days. so it can get in around the rings you don't want to break a ring the first revolution. pre 70's parts are available at laingsoutboards.com . 1968 and above at most online store, including Iboat marine store.

on my 35 i rebuilt the carb, new coils, condenser, points, plug wire, and impeller, around $150 in parts. i also sold the 2 line pressure tank on ebay , and converted to the newer 1 line tank, and fuel pump.

let us know when you get it dug out.

Thanks for your help. Will the crank seals be ok?? I know on Snowmobiles they get dried up and suck air taking out a cylinder..............

when you get it out, we will go thru it. turn it plug holes up and put marvel mystery oil in the cylinders for a day, then drain and turn over by hand. then we will do a compression check. after doing this mine had 135 on each cylinder. post the model number and lets see what you have.

The coils will be bad unless he has already replaced them. They are notorious for that. The top seal is a bugger to get out without the special tool. The bottom one is a carbon seal.

Still have not got it dug out but i did get the model and serial # tonight. It is an RDS20 with serial # 1757066 which makes it a 1958. I am in Montana where we get 11 inches of rain a year with NO humidity so i took a chance and stuck my thumb on the ring gear. It turned over fine for 1 full rotation. That is as far as i turned it until i get it drug out and fog lube the cylinders. Are parts available for a motor this old?? Thanks.......................

laingsoutboards.com has all the maintainance parts, i just did my 58 35 seahorse, carb kit, coils, plug wires, condensers, coils, impeller, all for around $150. now it's a dependable motor. heres the correct manual for yours:

Yep, those old motors are just fine..when they got into the "Selectric" shift, all downhill. That motor is as solid as day one. Do the ignition stuff, good carb clean, and good to go. Nothing else to go wrong if no torched innards fron someone being stupid..

Re: Johnson Super Seahorse 35???

that piece of paper is quiet important, in being able to register it. also increases the value of the boat. but not much.
