Great photo! A lesson to all those who keep saying you can't ski unless you have at least 115 hp.

That gold cowl 58 Super Seahorse was a super engine, and it still is. On an appropriate boat, you can do anything with it.

I miss mine.

That will all depend on the boat. Really. The boats built back in the time that that 35hp motor were designed around it. They performed really, really well with a 35hp motor. Since then, boats have changed, and a mid-60's design (probably some sort of trihull) is heavier, longer, and wider. They don't perform as well with a 35 as the older boats did.

That said, your RDS-20, on an appropriate boat, will pull a couple of skiiers...no problem. I don't know what your boat is, but I do know that some of the nice aluminum runabouts perform really well with a 35 hp. A 15' or 16' runabout from the early 60's will sing with that outboard.

The thing about the OMC 35 horse big twins is that they have oodles of low RPM torque, which is perfect for skiing (among other things). They pull like crazy at lower RPMs.

Back when I was a teenager, the OMC 35s were the prime motors for water skiing. The Mercs would run faster, but they weren't as good at getting the skiiers up an on top of the water.

I actually learned to ski behind a 13' glass over plywood boat with a Johnson 25hp Big Twin. That little boat was a mostly flat-bottomed thing, very wide in the beam, and it would pull two teenagers up on double skis, and me, alone, up on the primitive slalom skis of 1962.

So, what boat is this 35 on? If it's a period boat, you'll have no trouble pulling skiiers behind it.

OK, I went back and looked at the boat. I'd forgotten that you had posted photos. It's perfect for your RDS-20. You'll have a great time, and lots of folks will be interested in the boat.

I had the identical outboard, and people used to come up to my boat on the water and want to know what it was. It would troll down to a couple of MPH, and jumped my 14' 6" trihull onto plane almost instantly, running somewhere between 25 and 30 mph at WOT.

One guy said that he was amazed at the performance of the outboard.

Sadly, I don't have it anymore. A guy with a 1958 Larson came up to me at the launching ramp and offered me an obscene amount of money for the outboard...more than I had paid for the entire rig. So, I sold it to him.

I really miss my RDS-20, and hope I can find another one, along with a boat that matches the year.

This boat weighs next to nothing. I can roll it trailer and all around the yard very easilly. Couldn't do that with my 13' Larson WITHOUT a motor on it!!! It is a glass over plywood bottom with 1 layer glass hull. When the sun shines you can see through the hull. VERY LIGHT!!!:D:D:D:D

FR, that scratchy photo you posted looks like it was taken back in the 50's! :)

I agree. That boat and that outboard are absolutely made for each other. Literally. The boat will fly. A fine find, indeed.
