Re: Will it ever end ?

No big deal. Just repair it. Feather it out a few inches to get a gradual slope. Tape some plastic wrap on the outside of the hull and then reinforce with stiff cardboard also taped securely to the hull. Precut fiberglass cloth, starting small and overlapping by about 1/2" for 4 or 5 layers. Wet out the smallest piece on a piece of cardboard and add and wetout each successive piece until you have an upside down layer cake. Squeegee out excess resin. Lay it into the crack and lightly squeegee into place. I would then cover it with a larger piece of 12 oz biax. That is what I would do with epoxy. I just reread and understand you are using poly resin. If that is the case I think you may want to alternate cloth and mat, but those who know more will add better info.

BTW I made a foot long saw cut though my hull, and I know I ain't the first and won't be the last. Look at it as a right of passage.

Re: Will it ever end ?Need to call Interlux. They make great products. I did the Na

It seems as if I am grinding and itching and I am still in the same spot as before.....

How even or smoothe does the inner part of the transom have to be for the new transom to bond well to it ? It looks as if the transom was redone or not done well the last go around and left me trying to level out lumps of fiberglass ...

How long would you say you spent grinding away at the hull before considering it ready to glass the stringers and transom back in ?

I am considering using marine plywood when putting this puppy back together despite the $$ that I don't have. My question is do I use this for just the decking and transom or do I also use this for the stringers ? The local lumberyard actually carries this stuff at $73 a sheet of 3/4 .... is this the right thickness for stringers ? Would this be thick enough for the transom or overkill if I were to double up on i

Thanks for the help ....

Need to call Interlux. They make great products. I did the Napa parts-fiberglass route before, results- not so good! If ya put that much time in it, why not get the stuff right??? Interlux will steer you in the right direction. Do ya wanna have to f-with it again 2-3 uears from now?? JTM71

The boat I'm seeing will flex & leak. Cross pattern fiberglass cloth is the cure for the bow to transom. You need re-inforcements at an angle for the sides. Doubled with glass re-enforcements. It is not as bad as it seems. When your done, it will be "Super" strong. Think about how they design aluminum boats and use that principal. The grit on the grinder your using is too low for fiberglass work. The grit you have is cutter- grit. The right tools will make your boat last a lifetime. Use a mask, I got high for 3 days when I didn't pay attenetion to details. JTM71- tired of working on my boats from Tenn!

Re: Will it ever end ?

ok so I have yet to find anybody that mentions how much fiberglass to get and where they used it .... I did come accross the below though ...

Assuming you have a conventional type production boat with wood stringers here's a rule of thumb laminate schedule that will work on most 18's using polyester resin.

1.5oz or 3oz mat/18oz or 24oz woven roven/1.5oz or 3oz mat/18oz or 24oz woven roven.

If you go with Anderson's book beware he makes some things more complicated than necessary. In many cases removing decks, making jigs etc can be avoided and save much labor.

bp

So how many yards of each would I need for a 17' boat ? I just need a close guess as to what other people have used and what they used it for so I can get it ordered because I have no clue !

additionally has anybody used the "boat yard poly resin" ? I am seeing this several places and have to wonder if it is just cheap or an ok way to go ...

appreciate any help ....

Re: Will it ever end ?

ok ... well I did a lot more reading so that I can come up w/ a possible list of stuff I will need to get 3 stringers, transom and decking put back into this 17' tri-hull beast and think I finally found 1 place I can get everything from at a decent price.

Is this a good guess at needed glass / resin ?

Get about 20 disposable rubber squeegees and about 50-16 oz disposable graduated mixing cups.

I used 7.5 gallons epoxy
3 gallons ez fillit
60 yds 12oz biaxial tape
5yds 50" biaxial cloth
4 yds 6oz e-cloth
8 yds 4 oz e-cloth

That was for this boat with four stringers- 2@14' and 2@8'

Re: Will it ever end ?

so how did you do you fiberglass with the biaxial tape and cloth ?
Did you just use the tape on the sringers and then the cloth to do the decking and transom ?

I figured I would do four layers on all ... mat and then woven roving . Should I get tape to do sringers to hull and decking to hull and transom to hull as the initial bond ?

Re: Will it ever end ?

You must remember this is my first boat resto. I read every thread in this forum that had anything to do with fiberglass. I also read everything related here: http://boatdesign.net/forums/ and here http://forums.bateau2.com/viewforum.php?f=4 as well and other sources. I downloaded the epoxy book from systems 3 http://www.mertons.com/Epoxy/documents/epoxy_book.pdf.
I also obtained a copy of "Runabout Renovation". I would highly recommend you get a copy as it deals with using poly resin.
This forum is the single most valuable resource. Once you read and get a handle on terms etc you will know what most people are telling you.

I used the biax by first bedding-glueing the stringers down, keeping them in place with a jig.

I then added another layer of biax tape stagged so it went further onto the hull.
