When a manufacturer of paint claims a certain area that the paint will cover, say 100 sq ft per quart, is that for one coat or for the recommended number of coats?

Best case scenario on a good day, little to do with reality but most marine paint's are very good and of high value.

Re: Paint coverage

Which is the best case scenario? Coverage is for the recommended number of coats? Oh and I am talking marine paints.
Thanks

Re: Paint coverage

So if I want to cover 100 sq feet I would need 1 quart per coat so 4 quarts for 4 coats? Just trying to make sure I understand clearly.

Re: Paint coverage

The paint mfgs have no idea how many coats you are doing...they spec per coat @ xx mils thickness. Check the paint mfg for what thickness they spec at but figure around a 1.5 mils thickness for rule of thumb for many of them.

Re: Paint coverage

usually coverage is x amount of thickness for x amount of square area. usually paint manufacturers have the info on their websites, in the catalog or printed on the can
