old firestone 5hp motor.

I recently picked up a 5 Hp Firestone motor CODE # 133-6-1765,
Stock # 10-A-112, and serial # 17651887. I am unsire of the year. After going through the lower unit, I reassembled and find that I have no spark. There is no kill switch, or at least not one that is apparent. any help would be appreciated.

It's a 56-57 5 hp made by Scott Atwater. You can get a Scott factory service manual on CD at www.acmeoutboards.com. No spark means pulling the flywheel and checking the coils, points, etc. Clean the points and I bet you have spark. Refill the lower unit with a white grease like Lubriplate 105, recommended for non-shift, direct drive outboards of that vintage. Also check compression, you're wasting your time if it has none. It uses an H10J spark plug gapped at .035, point gap is .020 and recommended fuel mix is 16:1. Good luck, they are fun little motors...I have an earlier 3 hp 1 cylinder that is due for a checkup.

Not sure which magneto that one has, but if it is a Wico, they are notorious for getting a moldy looking corrosion on the points' contact surfaces. Take them apart and clean each one individually with some 400 grit wet-or-dry. Gap at .020

Along the same line, the Wico orange coils are nearly bulletproof, but the black ones always look like they have been shot by the bullet.

I pulled the flywheel and cleaned the points - they did have the moldy gunk as described. Still no spark. It is a shift model - still use the non shift grease? It has the orange coils. How can I tell if the condensers are bad? Compression is good. Everything else looks good.

EP 90 outboard gear oil.Disconnect the condensers and check the points with a meter.About 50% of the time when I clean points there is enough film left to cause problems.I usually wipe them with a piece of file card or manilla folder wetted with contact cleaner.also have used WD40 in a pinch.
