 after shearing the key that holds the flywheel to crankshaft and points cam , due to running into low water at the local lake. i pulled the flywheel and did find a sheared key , also i noticed that one set of points was set at .015 and the other at .010 i was thinking i heard here that they should be .020 i dont want to upset the timing by changing the point setting as i do not know how to set the timing if i change the point setting.. any advice on setting timing? the engine ran pretty well before the lake incident.. also shouldnt the prop shear pin of sheared before the flywheel key? what should the prop shear pin be made of? i think i may have the wrong shear pin in prop.. help . Phil

Re: force 50hp points/timing

Please post your model number. Props dont have shear pins anymore. They are made of super hard rubber that separates when impacted which would require the prop to be rehubbed at a prop shaft. Imagine something spinning at 5500 rpm and in less then 100th of a second it stops. That much force and torque will take out more then the prop that is why thes key in the powerhead went out. Post your model number and someone can get you a part number for the flywheel key and specs for your points.

Re: force 50hp points/timing

Thanks for the torque spec. as for timing i have read here that it can be done with plugs out and carb wide open then crank engine over. and use a timing light. Will this give a correct timing read out? others speak of a test tank and some speak of doing this on a running boat on the water. the last one sounds dangerous to me..;)
