I was looking at buying a 150 or a 175 e-tec or optimax and was wondering what the performance difference would be on a 19-21' deep v aluminum boat?I've been hearing good things about the e-tec but haven't heard much about the optimax. Thanks

Re: e-tec ?

They are both great motors, both are DFI.

This is like the Ford / Chevy Debate. The Optimax is slightly more fuel efficient on the higher HP models.

I agree it is like the Ford/Chevy thing, but to me the comparison when it comes to these two outboards isn't a very big one. The E-tec is a way more advanced DI system than the Optimax. The Optimax is a dated system that Merc just keeps putting out there, they have improved it to the point of just working out most of the bugs that used to blow powerheads, but haven't made it any better, in theory, than the original system.

E-tec is a whole new, improved generation of 2 Stroke DI, Optimax can't compare. Merc put all of it's eggs in the supercharged 4 stroke basket, Bomby can't come close to competing with them there.....but nobody can measure up to Bomby on DI, E-tec is the most innovative thing in outboards, maybe ever.

I have a 18' Wellcraft with a pretty deep " V " . I have an E-Tec 115hp on it. Fuel economy is very good. Performance is outstanding 4200rpm equals 40mph at 3/4 throttle, full tank of fuel (50 Gallons), and 3 adults.

I have only had the boat and motor for a very short time so can't speak from personal experiance of longevity. A friend of mine has a big Graddy White, 30' I think and has twin 250 E-Tecs and has had them for 4 years now and is very happy as well.

I dont know much about Mercs. I do know that when you read the forums that Mercs have, there are alot of repair and maintainance questions. Just do alot of research and you will pick the best motor for you.
