i think i'm useing to much oil

I have a 1992 100hp merc. i took it out today i used 12 gallons of gas. i know i use 12 gallons of gas bcasue i have a 12 and a 6 gallon tank. i used all the gas out of the 12 and when i got home i check to see how much oil i had used and the tank was over half empty. i filled it back up and it used about 3/4 of a gallon. i took the plugs out and they had what looked like wet gas and oil on them.is it useing to much oil

You need to be a little more precise than that. Put a piece of tape on the side of the oil tank. With the engine vertical, place a mark on the tape where the oil level is. Now run 12 gallons of fuel through it. Add oil, noting how much you are adding to bring it back up to the line. If it takes more than a quart it's using too much. 50:1 is a pint in six gallons of fuel. 12 gallons would require 2 pints (1 quart). Better a little too much than too little.

i had filled it up before i went out. it used 3/4 of a gallon of oil for 12 gallons

Josh, That is three times the oil you should have used. Do you have a leak in the oil line? Your motor running at 16::1 would smoke like all get out. The mosquitos would not have a chance to survive.
