Well, took the boat out today only to find water squirting out the weep hole on the back of the water pump. I have an '85 262ci. 4.3l V6. Can I replace with an automotive water pump or does it have to be marine? Does anyone know the part # I would need?

You'll need a marine water pump for the proper connections. If want the part number, an engine serial number would be helpful.

I'll try and get it, engines still hot. Where exactly is the serial # located?

The serial number tag is located near the STARTER, by the flywheel housing; or, on the ROCKER ARM or FLAME ARRESTOR COVER. It should begin with a zero followed by a letter (example 0A123456)

Just hit ebay or another online retailer - your V6 uses the same water pump as the small block V8's, you really shouldn't neeed a part number to find it.

Re: Mercruiser water pump

Well I took off the bad water pump only to find that there was a small hole on the back plate from corrosion and the pump looked to be an automotive pump. The impeller was metal as was the back plate. I got this one on ebay, is this one correct?

You are bidding on a BRAND NEW 5.7L (350ci) MARINE WATER PUMP. This is the exact model used in Volvo, Mercruiser, Indmar, Penta and other high-end marine engines. This pump is built with a bi-directional internal brass impeller and stainless steel backplate to withstand heavy duty wear in even the most strenous open water conditions. This new model will fit on a wide range of standard engines including 4.3L (262 ci), 5.0L (305 ci), 5.7L (307-350 ci)

Sounds good to me.

Thank you very much! Should I take off the back plate when I get it, to make sure the impeller will be turning the correct way? Or since it's bi-directional I don't need to worry about it?

Re: Mercruiser water pump

Okay, I already have another question: since I have the water pump off, should I put anything like Salt-a-way or something inside to clean out anything?
