i have a 25 foot 1982 larson single engine. i live in jersey and my boat is docked in englewood cliffs.(right next to the harlem river) i am going out to the hamptons next weekend and i was thinking of taking the boat. i have been boating for years however only on the hudson river. i have never been in the ocean. am i in over my head taking a boat all the way to east hampton?? would i be better off in the LI sound rather then the ocean......or does it matter. i dont have one of those chartplotters however i was going to purchace one for the trip. i need some advice. any ideas on best way to go about this trip.....

Re: trip to the hamptons

NO

That is a nasty place in the Ocean, rough water, tanker traffic , Fog , pretty much everything you can think of to get in BAD trouble

( no place to refuel without running and intlet)

The only way into the Island from there is Moriches inlet or Schinnecock inlet both of which are only safe at slack tides (and even then nasty places )

If you travel out the sound it will be much safer BUT require a LOT of planing for fuel stops and it is a really long trip

It would be well over 100 miles one way

I would work on a trip that would build you skills without putting your self in such risky places and cover such a long distance

You need to build up to a trip like this i will run as much as 90 miles on a day trip and it really wears you out if you not ready

Re: trip to the hamptons

For a person just starting to make trips it NOT a matter of boat size as much as a lack of experience in things like how to handle different sea conditins

What to do if something common like a fog bank rolls in ?

How far can you go on a tank of fuel in rough water ?

I dont want to stop you from expanding you horizons BUT this trip is a huge leap from your current boating conditions and NOT to taken lightly

Now if you start learning buy takeing trips out east on the Long Island Sound there are many safe and easy harbors to enter the water can get rough but is generaly not that bad and it is just a much safer way to go
