Just quits

Hi Everyone,
First time I have been on this forum. I have a 1967 75HP Chrysler model 75774. I bought it used but was told it ran great but was in storage for the bast 6 years in a heated garage (I live in Canada).

I have removed and clean the carbs in varsol and also blew them out with compressor. I have changed the fule lines and have rebuilt the fuel pump. In addition to this new spark plugs and cap have also been replaced.

The problem tha I am having is that the boat seems likes it misses from time to time. The CD module was replaced (as I believe Chrysler had some real issues with these in the past) along with the coil. Now here is the real weird thing. When I tighten the bolts on the cd box just slightly the engine will not turn over. When I loosen the bolts slightly on the top right side the engine turns over.

Moreover, I finally thought I got the engine performing properly after playing around with the points and distributor. It ran great all day with the odd cylinder missing once in awhile at full speed. Then out of the blue it just quit!

It wouldn't start for a few minutes but when it finally did as soon as I put it under load it would just die. So I had to be towed in.

The only odd thing I saw was that the engine was getting unusually hot just before it died.

Is there some sort of kill switch for an engine running to hot, could it be the CD module or perhaps the coil.

Please..please...please I hope someone out there has some advice! as I am totally lost.

Thanks

Re: Just quits

Check the wires where they cross over the block under the flywheel. There is nothing to hold them down. Sometimes they bounce up and rub against the flywheel, shorting and popping the rectangular circuit breaker at the bottom of the terminal board on the starter side (two red wires connecting to two terminals on it). When the breaker cools and resets, the engine will start and run until vibration causes the wires to touch the flywheel again. Drove me crazy for about three weekends. You probably have the rectangular metal breaker. You can replace it with a black plastic one that must be manually reset by button. It will not reset itself

Can't help you with your weird box. The starter circuit usually has nothing to do with it unless someone modified it. It should be: If you have a neutral interlock micro switch mounted on the distributor: One yellow wire to one side of the switch and the other yellow wire to the other side of the switch. Yellow from switch to small terminal on srarter solenoid at the left front of the engine pan. Check to be sure that the bent metal "cam" mounted on the distributor is fully depressing the white button on the micro switch, the button should be on the flat portion, not the ramp. This cam is adjustable.
If you have the microswitch mounted below the manifold, be sure the contact on the shift linkage is in the correct position, again, centered on the white button.

Re: Just quits

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it! Unfortunately I will be unable to perform your suggestion until this weekend (Canada Day) as I live in the city.

I will let you the outcome as soon as I try. I hope it solves my problem

PS do you think the coil would have any relationship to the problem?

Thanks again
