When painting aluminum or fiberglass it's best to use a self etching primer, other than that the painting procedure is pretty standard. You can buy matching paint in spray cans from most marine centers or the dealer. Most automotive paint suppliers can also custom mix matching paint. I've seen plain enamel used too with ok results, but like anything you paint, it's all in the prep work.

Reelfishin hit the nail on the head. It's 90% prep work. On your aluminum you do not need to sand it to bare metal. If you do then a light spray with zinc chromate will do the trick. I've had very good luck with automotive urethane ( 2 part ). No, don't worry about the paint shaking off the engine. If you take your time and do a good job on the prep - didn't we just mention that ? - it will be hard to scrape off.

I never heard of vibration shaking off the paint. There was a song that went "She could dance all night and shake the paint off the wall", but that is a different thing.

The most important thing is that you use a paint suitable for outdoors. Prime it properly and make sure the surface is clean dry and oil free.

The vibration won't but the pressure of the water blasting against the lower drive will.
I spent a whole day sanding and primering mine and the first trip in the water it started peeling. That was using Dupli-color auto paint.

Re-painted with zinc chromate primer and Tempo Johnson white. No problems now.

Yes,The Tempo is all i used on my fiberglass cover and the lower.
The zinc chromate is the etching primer. I ordered mine from Iboats or check Go2marine...;)

Re: what kind of paint shoild i use?

Usually the the zinc primer is used just on the lower part that stays in the water.Just one very light coat is all you need.
On mine, the hood and upper half i used regular primer.
I have painted the upper without primer and just used the paint.
Go over the old paint with light sandpaper.
The Johnson white will cover good if you use a couple light coats then go a little more heavy after that.
I went over all of mine with the Tempo clear coat.It turned out nice.

Zinc C is getting hard to find here; I have had good luck with self-etching.
(it is green, so you know the difference)
