i am trying to remove lower unit on my 1967 evinrude sport 60
model 60733

The lower unit comes loose and hangs it will not disconnect, the manual dose not cover this problem. the lower unit has a extension gearcase the sit on top of it then the power head.

I removed all the bolts wear the extension meets the exhaust case, which lets the extension gear case and lower unit hang but it will not drop out.
also the engine is in netrual .

Should the engine be in forward?
Will this let drop down?

isn't that electric shift. did you disconnect the wire. and get it thru the housing. if not electric, did you disconnect the shift linkage.

That is mechanical shift. Remove the inspection plate about half way down the midsection, then remove the second one behind it. Inside, you will find the brass shift rod connector. Remove the lower bolt from it, then you can drop the gearcase down.

When you put it back together, use a flashlight to look in there and make sure the notch in the shift rod is perfectly aligned with the screw hole before inserting the bolt. If it is not exactly aligned, it will wipe the threads off the screw every time. Then it will fall out 5 miles from the dock.

Get parts from any evinrude or johnson dealer. You mean the shift rod coming out of the gearcase is bent? It is supposed to be. That's so it will clear the water pump. If it is leaking oil around it, the seal is shot. It is just a fat o-ring, but you have to take the gearcase apart to replace it.

Re: Low Unit Problem-evinrude

A just finished taking the water water pump off , it has black oil in the house too.
Also a white crust in the housing, what is that?

I am really not happy with the clymer shop manual ..i bought today.
sleco manual for my other motor is way better then this.

Anyway...i bought i lower unit seal kit , it is on order.

Question , if i remove the lower gear case assembly to get to seal is there any thing else i should do? Any special tools need?

The oil was milk white / when changed/ no shavings
