mechanical advance issue?

I have a 1965 mercruiser 120 hp, 4 cylinder i/o drive.
The boat sat for about 10 years until 3 summers ago. It has 490 hours on it. Since trying to get it to run, I have replaced plugs, points, distributer cap, coil, wires. I have had the carburator rebuilt.

I can get the the engine to either idle well or run at WOT under load well. I can't get both to work by adjusting the cap and finding the one sweet spot. My current problem is trying to operate the boat at no wake. Lots of those spots around here.

I don't see any hoses going to the distributer. I am then assuming it is not a vacuum advance timing system.

I am not even close to being a backyard mechanic. I have asked older mechanical friends and relatives about the mechanical advance. They shrug and go hmmn.... never worked on one of those before.

any suggestions?
Thanks.

If you don't know how to set the timing or check the timing advance you will have to take it in to a shop. There is no such thing as turning the cap to find the "sweet spot", you will cause serious damage to your engine running it like that.

Get a timing light, and time it by the book.
