Re: Wont Go In Neutral?

1969 is hydro-electric drive. Good luck. I had a 1972 65 hp Johnson; very similar motor to yours; weak link seemed to be the shift switch in the control box; had to replace it 3 times in 15 years of owning it; other than that its a great motor.

in my book it says that when you ohm the solenoids they should read 4.5-6.5 I am getting 12 volts straight thru, cant seem to find the problem.

Re: Wont Go In Neutral?

Are you getting the 12 volts at the blue and green wires back at the powerhead, where they go down to the lower unit? With the wires CONNECTED? Should have 12v on green in neutral and both green and blue in reverse. If you don't have thsi, the problem is in the wiring or switch, most likely the switch. If you do have the required 12V and it won't shift, the problem is in the lower unit. First thing to check is the oil, because it is the oil that actually does the shifting. You ARE aware that the motor has to be running in order to shift, aren't you??

Other than battery power supply to the various components, being in neutral has nothing at all to do with spark to the plugs. But now I am seeing the light!! You don't have spark to the plugs, so you are trying to get it into neutral in order to get spark. Ain't going to happen. Like I said it has to be running to shift. No spark, no run, no neutral. You are fixing the wrong end.

Re: Wont Go In Neutral?

we can't get it into neutral to start it, am I correct in this " the safety switch prevents the boat from starting unless it is in neutral" we can't get it to go into neutral at all (problem 1), and yes there is no spark but we cannot figure out why we dont have spark (problem 2) we have power everywhere, except up to the stater and plugs (3), how can we test the power pack to make sure the pack is good? (problem 4)

also can someone tell me what the purpose of the primary lead assembly is for and what wire would go to it?

it does not have a neutral safety switch, it starts in forward,

Re: Wont Go In Neutral?

beattie, I am telling you that you cannot get it into neutral unless it is running. With the neutral button pushed, you should be able to start the motor. THEN when it is running it will instantly go into neutral.

There is a safety switch on the engine that prevents starting with the throttle advanced too far. That switch only keeps the starter from running. It does not prevent spark.

There is not supposed to be any "power up to the stator".

I don't know exactly what you mean by the primary lead.

Your book should tell how to troubleshoot the ignition system. Warning: messing around with that stuff can very easily blow the amplifier and/or alternator rectifier if you don't know what you are doing. Study your book or leave it alone.

Re: Wont Go In Neutral?

are you saying it will not turn over. try jumping the solenoid, if not then straight jump to the starter pos post from batt pos post. it's very unclear what the problem is. i have a 71 50 with the same set up.

Re: Wont Go In Neutral?

basically I think I now know what the probs are, it is in the wiring, we had to change it because the wires were bad and could not get a harness, so in that we have several wires that we dont know what they go too, then I went to a boat shop today and showed them the wiring diagram I have and he said that is not accurate at all he called it a cell something, basically aftermarket piece of crap! so we are back to the drawing board, trying to find the exact wiring diagram for this motor, I am definetly seriously thinking of scaping it.
