A few years ago, a friend gave me two Ted Williams 7.5hp motors. One of them ran and the other he used for parts. Two years ago I used the one that ran and it ran great no problems. Last year I was having issues getting it to start so I did not use the motor for the season. This year I really would like to get it up and running again, but I have a few questions.

Motor info:

Model 217-5949-1
S/N 4B-559691

1)Does anyone have any info on this motor? (what year it is, who made it, ect.)

2)What fuel/oil mixture should I be using?

3)I know this is an air cooled motor, but can I run it out of the water for maintenance/troubleshooting purposes or do I need to have it in water?

Any info would be great and I thank you in advance.

It is a 1974 made by Eska. It uses a Tecumseh 640-08 powerhead. Has to be in water to run because it has a water pump to cool the exhaust. Now you know as much about it as I do.

24:1 or 32:1, using 2-stroke aircooled oil (like for chainsaws). Me, I just 24:1 on those engines.

If you type that model number, with a period instead of the first dash, and drop the second dash over at ww3.sears.com you'll be able to access the exploded parts diagrams and parts lists.

Before you go too far on that engine, check the spark. That engine, I believe, uses the Tecumseh solid state ignition. If so, there will be a rectangular block bolted to the cylinder head with the spark plug coming out of it.

If there's no spark, you're essentially hosed, since the parts for that ignition are almost impossible to find, and not available new.

The best parts resource is certifiedpartscorp.com. Call the number on the website to inquire about parts. You'll want your model number, and the number off the tag on the engine block. They have most parts, except for those pesky ignition parts.

There are tons of these outboards around, as you'll see if you scan down the page here. If you have an ignition problem, you might watch for another engine that has another kind of problem and buy it as a parts engine.

It's sad that the parts can't be found. I have a 2-cylinder 9.9 hp one of these, and it's lying in the garage due to an inability to find the parts. Pity.

Re: Ted Williams 7.5hp motor

Thanks for the info, I checked the spark plug for what you mentioned and it is located directly in the middle of the cooling prongs for the motor, so I assume this means that I am in luck with the ignition system. I have an identical motor that is used for spare parts, so worst case, I could cann the parts from the parts motor.
