1991 yamaha 15hp dependable?

Greetings, just a question about the 1991 Yamaha 15hp model number 15MSHP

One of these engines is for sale locally for $500. He says it starts right up, but may need a tune up...

Are these particular engines pretty reliable? Im looking to get a more powerful motor for my inflatable, and the price seems pretty reasonable for a 15hp.

Also, my grandfather has a late 1980's Mariner 15HP that looks very simliar to this Yamaha... are they in fact the same motor?

Basically the same motor. Yamaha built them for Mariner for a number of years.

thanks for confirming that! I guess I have an answer to my own question then, as I know my Grandpas 15hp Mariner has been completely dependable in the 20 years he has owned it!

I am glad to see you are choosing a yamaha for your inflatable as they go well together ..... these motor are very dependable as I have a few of them and they still go strong .... apart from a good carb clean every now and again they are great motors ....

Yea I currently have a 1967 6hp evinrude but it sorta struggles with me and my girlfriend on board to get on plane..., I would really like more speed outta my inflatable!

So do you think $500 is a good price on a 1991 15hp Yammie? The person selling it is actually advertising a 12' fiberglass boat and the engine for $600. Since I dont need the boat I am hoping he will sell me just the engine for $400-500...

I figure worst case I'll buy the boat and engine off him, then just sell the boat locally for like $100

Yep that is a good price, no doubt .... yeah you can easily just sell the boat again .... good luck
